Best Time of Year to Buy a Yacht

Timing your purchase can save you 10-20% on the same yacht. Here's when buyers get the best deals.

When you buy can matter as much as what you buy. Yacht prices vary by season, and patient buyers save significantly.

The general rule

Buy in the off-season, sell in peak season. For most yacht markets, the off-season is October through February.

Why off-season pricing favours buyers

Sellers who list in winter are usually motivated — they didn't sell during peak season and want out before spring. They're more willing to negotiate, accept lower offers, and include extras.

Regional variations

**Northern Hemisphere** Best buyer window: October-February Sellers feeling pressure: November-January Worst time to buy: April-July

**Southern Hemisphere** Best buyer window: April-September Worst time to buy: October-March

**Mediterranean charter market** Best buyer window: September-November (post-season) Worst time to buy: March-May

End-of-year tax considerations

Sellers may push to close deals before year-end for tax reasons. December can produce surprisingly motivated sellers, especially on higher-value vessels.

Boat shows

Major boat shows (Fort Lauderdale October, Cannes September, Düsseldorf January) generate listings and motivated sellers immediately after. Watch for price drops in the 2-4 weeks following major shows.

When NOT to wait

If you find the right yacht — make, model, condition, location, price — buy it. Waiting for a "better deal" on a unique yacht usually means losing it to someone else.
