The Yacht Buying Process: Step by Step

From first inquiry to closing day, here's every step of buying a yacht — and how long each takes.

Buying a yacht is more complex than buying a house. Here's exactly what to expect.

Phase 1: Pre-shopping (2-4 weeks)

**Week 1-2: Self-education** Learn about yacht types, prices, your true budget. Read articles, watch videos, attend boat shows.

**Week 2-3: Define needs** What size? What use? Where will you keep it? Solo or with crew? Day-sail or overnight?

**Week 3-4: Get pre-approved** Marine loan pre-approval. Talk to insurers about coverage and rates. Reserve marina slip if needed.

Phase 2: Active shopping (4-12 weeks)

**Browse listings** Elyxe, YachtWorld, BoatTrader, broker networks. Save interesting vessels.

**Find a buyer's broker** Free to you in most cases (paid via co-brokerage). They know the market, have relationships, and protect your interests.

**Visit yachts** Plan visits efficiently. See 4-8 vessels in person before serious negotiation. Photos lie — in-person matters.

**Narrow to finalists** 2-3 vessels worth serious consideration. Compare specs, conditions, locations, prices.

Phase 3: Offer and negotiation (1-2 weeks)

**Make initial offer** Typically 90-95% of asking price for fairly priced vessels. Include contingencies: survey, sea trial, financing.

**Negotiation** Counter-offers typically take 2-7 days. Your broker handles communication.

**Accepted offer** Sign Purchase and Sale Agreement. Put 10% deposit in escrow.

Phase 4: Due diligence (3-6 weeks)

**Schedule survey** Hire SAMS or NAMS surveyor. Cost: $15-25 per foot. Schedule sea trial same day or next day.

**Survey day** Surveyor inspects 4-8 hours. Sea trial 1-2 hours. You attend if possible.

**Survey report** Delivered 3-7 days after survey. 20-40 pages. Review carefully.

**Negotiate based on findings** Major issues either get fixed by seller, price reduced, or deal cancelled. Minor issues are buyer's problem.

Phase 5: Closing (2-4 weeks)

**Finalise financing** Submit signed survey, insurance binder, final paperwork to lender.

**Marine attorney (for high-value)** Review documents. Search for liens. Handle escrow.

**Title and documentation** Transfer title. File documentation. Update registration.

**Insurance** Binder before closing. Full policy effective at closing.

**Closing day** Sign final documents. Funds transfer. Keys hand over. Take possession.

Phase 6: Ownership begins

**Move to your marina** Often part of closing logistics. Confirm slip before closing day.

**Captain familiarisation** For larger yachts, hire a captain for 5-10 hours of training. Worth every cent.

**First service** Even with recent service, do an "owner's service" within first 30 days. Establish your maintenance baseline.

Total timeline

  • Pre-shopping: 2-4 weeks
  • Active shopping: 4-12 weeks
  • Offer to closing: 6-12 weeks
  • **Total: 3-7 months typically**

Rushed purchases (under 30 days) usually have more problems than carefully done deals.
