How to Photograph Your Yacht for Maximum Selling Power
Listing photos are the #1 thing buyers look at. Here's how to get photos that actually sell your yacht.
Listing photos are the single biggest factor in whether buyers contact your broker. Bad photos kill listings. Great photos sell yachts.
What buyers want to see
- Clean exteriors from multiple angles
- Wide-angle interior shots of each cabin
- Engine room (lit, organised, accessible)
- Helm station and electronics
- Bridge or flybridge views
- Detail shots of upgrades and features
Preparing for the photo shoot
**Clean obsessively** Polish hull, wash deck, clean windows inside and out. Hire professional detailing if needed — it pays for itself.
**Stage the interior** Make beds with new linens. Remove personal items. Hide cords and clutter. Set out fresh flowers, drinks, or plates to suggest lifestyle.
**Time the shoot** Best light is 1-2 hours before sunset (golden hour) or 1-2 hours after sunrise. Avoid midday harsh shadows.
Professional vs amateur
For yachts over $100,000, professional photography pays for itself in faster sales and higher prices. Expect $500-$2,000 for a complete shoot.
For under $100K, an enthusiastic amateur with a decent camera can do well — just follow the principles below.
Essential shots
1. **Hero exterior shot** — full vessel, water visible, dramatic lighting 2. **Profile view** — both sides of the hull from water level 3. **Bow on / stern on** — symmetrical, water level 4. **Cockpit and aft deck** 5. **Bridge or flybridge** — full view including helm 6. **Salon** — wide angle showing the whole space 7. **Galley** — clean, well lit, no clutter 8. **Each cabin** — bed made, no personal items 9. **Each head** — clean, dry, no toiletries visible 10. **Engine room** — lit, organised, accessible 11. **Helm electronics** — modern systems are selling points 12. **Detail shots** — wood, hardware, upgrades
What to avoid
- Cluttered backgrounds
- Personal items in shots
- Wet swimsuits or laundry visible
- Phone cameras for vessels over $50K
- Photos at marina with other boats blocking view
- Photos when sun is harsh and shadows are deep
Drone photography
Drone shots are now table stakes for yachts over $200K. A single great aerial shot of your vessel on the water sells the lifestyle, not just the boat.
Video tours
A 60-90 second walkthrough video on YouTube embedded in the listing dramatically increases buyer engagement. Brokers who do this consistently outsell those who don't.
